Stage-director Nils Wyn (Herbert Flack) is rehearsing a play authored by himself, called ‘The Whore, the Virgin and the Dying Man’. During these rehearsals he gets in conflict with the leading actress, his girlfriend Tessa Mahon (Liz Snoyink) who plays the whore, but rather would have played the virgin. The recalcitrant director Nils is unable to clarify why he wants Tessa to play the whore as he sees is, and feels deserted. The professional conflict puts pressure on their private relationship, in which all other contributors to the play get involved; everyone using it for their own purpose.
